Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada: A Photographic Guidebook to Finding and Using Key Species - David L. Spahr
Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada: A Photographic Guidebook to Finding and Using Key Species - David L. Spahr
This is hands down our favorite mushroom guide. While other identification resources include more species, for readers who are primarily interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms, this one has the information you need to make educated identification determinations and to learn the properties and preparation of each species. It includes over thirty mushrooms, with detailed descriptions of key characters, and importantly, thorough overviews of any potential lookalikes. There are more photographs in this book than other comparable resources, which is a huge help. And whenever possible, it avoids technical terminology that might inhibit readers’ understanding. Spahr also includes chapters with collecting and photographing tips, explanations of numerous ways to prepare and preserve mushrooms, propagation strategies, and dyeing with mushrooms.
It’s important to note that while this guide is the best resource that we know of for beginner and hobby mushroom-hunters, it is always wise to consult additional resources, such as more technical manuals like “Mushrooms Demystified” by David Aurora, and reputable websites (e.g. those moderated by mycological societies and associations). When in doubt: don’t put it in your mouth.
