This photographic field guide is currently the best resource for those taking a close look at seaweed, not just in the Northeast Atlantic, but also in the Northwest Atlantic (including Maine). Currently, there is no photographic field guide to seaweeds of Maine. Naturalist’s Notebook manager Jordan Chalfant and her co-authors Glen Mittelhauser and Dr. Amanda Savoie are working on one, but it won’t be published for another few years. Jordan uses this guide on a regular basis, for its extremely helpful images, terminology-light descriptions, and carefully researched morphometrics. There is (very roughly) a 60% overlap between the species found in the Northeast and Northwest Atlantic, making this the most helpful illustrated book on seaweeds that we know of. Bunker et al. are respected phycologists, and their work on this guide is of the highest quality. 312 pages.
